The Beta Epsilon Theatrum
The Beta Epsilon THEATRUM
The Beta Epsilon Theatrum was designed by Architect Roni Manahan BE’57 as a gift to UP during its 75th Diamond Jubilee in 1983. Located in the lagoon area behind the University Amphitheater, this freestanding structure was conceived to serve as a stage for various performances. The original design placed the stage at the lagoon’s edge, enhancing the acoustic experience. The first event held there was Prof. Dominador Ilio’s Poetry Reading in December 1984. Since then, it has been a venue for theater plays and poetry readings, promoting culture and the arts.
Over the years, the Beta Theatrum has undergone several refurbishments and repairs. In 2005, the marker was enhanced to underscore the fraternity’s ownership and legacy of the project. A significant renovation took place in 2011-2012, carried out collectively by Betan alumni and residents. During this time, it became a favored spot for Beta Epsilon activities, such as the annual Visita Iglesia. In 2013, the residents undertook another facelift and repainting in preparation for university events like Jazz@Heart by the UP Jazz Ensemble.
In 2014, Typhoon Glenda caused extensive damage to the structure and its surrounding lagoon. Once again, Betan alumni stepped up to clean and repair the area, preserving this important piece of the fraternity’s heritage.
